Description

Ayott-St Lawrence or Ayott-Magna, a parish in Herts, near the river Maran, 2 1/2 miles NE from Wheathamstead station on the G.N.R. Post town, Welwyn; money order and telegraph office, Codicote. Acreage, 751; population, 137. The living is a rectory in the diocese of St Albans; gross value, £137 with residence. The church was rebuilt, in 1778, at the expense of Sir Lionel Lyde, in the Grecian style, after a design by Revett. The previous church still stands as a ruin, and contains some curious monuments. Ayot House is a fine old country seat, standing in a park of 200 acres.
