Birtle-cum-Bamford, a township in Middleton parish, Lancashire. The township comprises the ecclesiastical parishes of Birtle and Bamford, and lies 2 1/2 miles NE of Bury station on the L. & Y.R. Acres, 1447 ; population, 1852. There is a post and telegraph office at Bamford under Rochdale, which is the money order office. The inhabitants are employed chiefly in cotton and woollen factories, coal mines, and stone quarries. The living of Birtle is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; value, £150. Patron, the Rector of Middleton. The church was built in 1845-46. The living of Bamford is a vicarage; value, £209, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester. The church was consecrated in 1886. There are five dissenting chapels in the township.
